The
history of basketball
The
history of basketball is a rich one with strong Canadian roots, beginning
with Dr. James Naismith.
Dr.
Naismith
Dr.
Naismith, a Canadian instructor at the YMCA Training School in Springfield,
Massachusetts, was approached by the head of the physical education department,
Dr. Luther Gulick, with a problem. New England's cold winter was soon
approaching and an indoor sport was needed for their students to play.
Outdoor sports like soccer and lacrosse were considered too rough to play
inside, so Naismith created a game based on thirteen rules that would
later become known as basketball.

The
history of basketball - the first game
On
December 21, 1891 peach baskets were nailed below a ten-foot walkway.
The purpose of the game, as explained in Naismith's book, Basketball,
It's Origin and Development, remains the same - - to put the ball in the
opponent's goal. Initially, a janitor would sit on a ladder next to the
basket and retrieve made shots. Later, a small hole was cut from the bottom
of the basket so a pole could be used to pop the ball free. Within two
years, an iron rim with braided cord netting was manufactured, much like
our modern day basketball rim.
The
first basket
The
only basket from the first game ever played was scored by William R. Chase.
Chase used the soccer ball they were playing with to sink a twenty-five
foot shot from midcourt. The basket was worth only one point, while today,
a similar shot would be worth three points.
The
first players
Of
the eighteen players that played in the inaugural game, five players were
from Canada and one was from Japan. When these students returned home
for their Christmas breaks, they shared the game with their friends in
gyms and youth centers. This was basketball's first international expansion.
The present day NBA has staged regular season, playoff and exhibition
games in Canada, Japan, Mexico, France and Italy. Forty-six international
players from twenty-eight countries currently play in the NBA, with four
of these players being Canadian.
Birth
of the NBA
In
1946, the National Basketball Association was formed with eleven teams,
including the Toronto Huskies. The NBA's first game was played in Toronto
on November 1, 1946 with the New York Knickerbockers edging the Huskies,
68-66. The Huskies hired Ed Sadowski as their player-coach, only to trade
him twelve games into the season to the Cleveland Rebels.

NBA
Expansion
The
Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies joined the NBA in the 1995-96
season. The Canadian teams were led by their rookies, point guard Damon
Stoudamire (Raptors) and centre Bryant "Big Country" Reeves
(Grizzlies). The young players had impressive debuts, as both were selected
to the NBA Rookie Game at All-Star Weekend and Stoudamire was named the
game's Most Valuable Player. Stoudamire led Toronto in scoring and assists
and was voted as the 1996 NBA Rookie of the Year. In the seasons to come,
both Toronto and Vancouver would improve their teams through the draft,
adding players such as Vince Carter and Shareef Abdur-Rahim to their lineups.
Like Stoudamire, Carter was named the 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year.
