History
Expansion:
After
completing 60 seasons - 1901-1960 - with eight clubs each in the American
and National Leagues, Major League Baseball expanded in the early 1960's,
adding two teams to the American League in 1961 and two teams to the National
League a year later.
The
Los Angeles Angels and the Washington Senators were baseball's first expansion
teams in 1961. The Angels, the AL's first franchise on the West Coast,
moved to Orange County in 1965 and became the California Angels. They
changed their name to the Anaheim Angels in 1996. The Washington franchise
replaced the original Senators, which moved to Minneapolis-St. Paul following
the 1960 season and became the Minnesota Twins. The new Senators franchise
moved to Arlington, Texas in 1972 to become the Texas Rangers in Major
League Baseball's last franchise relocation.
The
National League expanded in 1962 by adding the New York Mets and the Houston
Colt .45s. The Colt .45s later changed their name to the Astros.

The
two leagues remained at 10 teams until 1969, when each added two more.
The Kansas City Royals and the Seattle Pilots joined the AL, while the
San Diego Padres and the Montreal Expos started play in the National League.
The Expos became the first MLB franchise to play outside the United States,
while the Pilots lasted only one season in Seattle before moving to Milwaukee
to become the Brewers.
The
American League was next to expand, when the Toronto Blue Jays and the
Seattle Mariners started play in 1977. The Blue Jays gave the AL its first
Canadian franchise, while the Mariners provided a return of Major League
Baseball to the Pacific Northwest.
The
leagues evened their numbers at 14 apiece when the Colorado Rockies and
Florida Marlins started play in 1993.
In
1998, the National League added the Arizona Diamondbacks, while the Tampa
Bay Devil Rays began play in the American League. Major League Baseball
has a total of 30 teams, 16 in the National League and 14 in the American
League.

All
of the current expansion franchises except Tampa Bay have made it to post-season
play. The Arizona Diamondbacks reached the post-season faster than any
other expansion team to date by winning the NL West Division in 1999,
their second full season. Arizona also reached the World Series faster
than any other expansion team, defeating the New York Yankees in 2001,
its fourth full season. The Mets became the first expansion franchise
to win a World Series in 1969, their eighth season. The Mets have played
in the most World Series (four) of any expansion franchise and are tied
with the Blue Jays for the most World Championships by an expansion franchise
with two. Kansas City and the Mets have been to the post-season six times,
tied for the most among expansion franchises.
The
most successful expansion team in terms of winning percentage is the Kansas
City Royals, which own a ) mark. The Angels, with an 86-76
mark in 1962, and the Diamondbacks, with a 100-62 record in 1999, were
the quickest expansion franchises to post a winning record, their second
seasons.
