Gambling Basics
Betting
on baseball is much different from football and basketball since a point
spread is not used. Normally, the betting line is based on a money line
and that is where the confusion usually starts. The odds or money line,
are based on the starting pitchers because they are considered as the
most decisive factor in predicting the outcome of a baseball game.
Here is what a typical baseball game looks like on the betting board:
Game
# 901 Houston Astros S Reynolds 8
Game
# 902 LA DODGERS K Brown -150
Let's
break down the above example and explain what this means. Unless otherwise
noted, in all sports, the bottom team is ALWAYS the home team. The Dodgers
pitcher is Kevin Brown and the Astros pitcher is Shane Reynolds. Brown
-150 simply means if you bet on the Dodgers you must put up150 dollars
to win 100 dollars or to break it down even more, 15 dollars to win 10
dollars. If you were to bet on the Astros you would put up 100 dollars
to win 140 dollars or 10 dollars to win 14 dollars on a smaller scale.
This is commonly known as a ten cent line, because the variance from Brown
-150 to Reynolds + 140 is ten cents. The example below illustrates this.
Game
# 901 Houston Astros S Reynolds +140
Game
# 902 LA DODGERS K Brown -150

Remember
the team with the minus is the favorite and the team with the plus is
the underdog. In baseball the minus is what you have to put up to win
a dollar and the plus is what you get for every dollar you bet.
The number 8 in the first example is the "total" or "over/under"
line on the game. You can bet the game will have "over" 8 runs
scored by both teams combined or "under" 8 runs scored by both
teams combined. In this particular example, the bettor has to bet 110
dollars to win 100 on the over or the under. There will be times when
you may see a total listed as 8ov25. What this means is if you want to
bet the "over", you must bet 125 dollars to win 100 and to bet
the "under", you must bet 100 dollars to win 105. Totals are
usually based on a 20 cent line. But enough of that. We don't want to
confuse you too much. That will all come to you once you grasp the basic
understanding of baseball betting.
The game numbers 901 and 902 are the game bet numbers that identify which
team you wish to wager on. If you walk up to the window and say "I
want to bet the Dodgers for 150 dollars", the clerk at the window
will ask you to use the game number. The proper way to call out this bet
would be to say, "Number 902 for 150 dollars, please".
Sports books may compete with each other for a player's business by offering
15-cent, 10-cent and even 5-cent lines. The difference in these lines
is seen in the "comeback." In the above 10-cent line example,
the comeback on the underdog is a 10-cent difference. If the Dodgers are
favored -150, and the sports book uses a 20-cent line in the comeback,
then the Astros would be +130. It is to the players' advantage to shop
around to see what the various books offer.
