  • North Carolina set to hire Davis

Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - The University of North Carolina is set to hire former Cleveland Browns coach Butch Davis as its new head football coach.

According to a report in the Winston Salem Journal, the announcement could be made early next week.

UNC was seeking a replacement for John Bunting, who was fired on October 22, although he is still coaching the team until the end of the season.

North Carolina is just 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this year and only 25-44 under Bunting, who took over the program in 2001.

Davis has been out of coaching since 2004 after being fired by the Browns. He is best known for coaching the Miami Hurricanes, however, where he amassed a 51-20 record over six seasons.
